The Grammy Recording Academy Department Has a New Structure

The Grammy Awards are presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the Latin Recording Academy in conjunction to honor outstanding accomplishments in the music business. The winners are chosen from a wide range of musical genres, including gospel, jazz, reggae classical, pop music, rap, R&B, and country music, to mention a few. Award categories include albums, best of year recordings, and best new artist. To date, over 75 awards have been given out.

The first major music awards show of the year to air on one of the Big Three television networks is the Grammy Awards. The Academy honors, Emmys, Tony Awards, and Grammy are the four main annual music honors in the United States. The 64th Grammy Awards will take place at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on January 31, 2022.

Procedure for Selecting and Entering Nominees

NARAS members have access to an online listening facility in lieu of nominated recordings. More than 150 professionals from the music industry attend the evaluation session, where recordings are evaluated based on their substance. The five recordings that have received the most votes overall, across all categories, are the candidates. In each category, the final five nominees are chosen by review committees.

Committee for Nomination Review

  • Broad Category

At least twenty voting Academy members who have been approved by the Trustees make up this committee. The committee assesses the top 20 candidates from the membership vote in public on the first ballot and then votes in private to choose the top eight nominees in each category.

  • For more specific categories

These panels are made up of 13–17 experts from different fields. After reviewing and hearing the top 15 selections from the general membership survey, the committees convene to select the five finalists in each category by secret ballot.

Final Champions

NARAS voting members receive final voting ballots and are able to cast ballots in up to nine categories in addition to the general fields. Secret ballot tallying is done by a separate accounting company. The Grammy Awards declare the winners after tallying the votes.

The Current Debate Over “Secret Committees”

The path to a Grammy has long been a secret, even in the music industry, but since Everyone has been even more confused since former Recording Academy president and C.E.O. Deborah Dugan accused the organization of widespread ballot fraud on March 2.
Dugan accused the Academy of retribution and illegal voting procedures in a 44-page complaint he filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
According to a statement, Dugan “failed to execute her job obligations as promised and expected,” which led to her dismissal from the Recording Academy on March 2.
But before the arbitration proceedings are scheduled, the Recording Academy and its expelled president, Deborah Dugan, have reached a deal. The agreement was kept secret.
American pop singer Halsey, who was also passed over for a Grammy in 2021, called the nomination process “elusive” and stated that she wanted “more openness or reform” last year.
The Trustees have appointed Harvey Mason Jr. as the Recording Academy’s C.E.O. as of June 1.

Terminating “Secret Committees”

The Grammy Awards organizers announced that the “Secret Committees” would no longer be in place, addressing concerns that the biggest awards in the business could be manipulated.
As part of a thorough restructuring of its Awards department, the controversial “secret committees” that choose the final Grammy candidates were eliminated starting on May 1. Ruby Marchand has been nominated by the Recording Academy for chief awards and industry officer following the resignation of longtime award director Bill Freimuth earlier this month. Joanna Chu is now the vice president of awards, a promotion. The new appointments are effective immediately. The process is streamlined in many ways by doing away with hidden committees, which supposedly leave final nominations to Grammy voters and do away with the previous insider curation of final nominees for the majority of categories.

Recently Assigned Tasks and Experience

Throughout the entire Awards season, the Chu will be in command of the team. Reporting to Marchand, she will collaborate with her to reaffirm key Academy objectives during the Awards season, with a particular emphasis on inclusion, equity, and diversity. She was a managing director and director in the Academy Awards Department before. Before enrolling in the Academy, she was one of the few female software engineers in the aerospace industry, working in Silicon Valley.
Marchand will continue to oversee the Academy’s membership, awards, and industry connections; she will be accountable to co-president Valeisha Butterfield Jones. With her new role, Marchand will work closely with the genre managers of the Awards team to connect with music fans all throughout the nation and beyond.
Harvey Mason, Jr. expressed his opinions. “We are excited to have Ruby and Joanna in their new positions as we work to completely revamp our award procedures,” the CEO said.
